ECU Tuning Tools Compared Autotuner Flex KESS3
Each serious tool on "pro" level has its own research and development team who daily push the boundries on what ecus/tcus tool can do by adding more protocols to list.
Top 3 on actively still researching and developing more protocols with large userbase are autotuner, flex, kess v3.
Top3 at the moment is autotuner (new upcomer, this is the schools guy doing everyones homework and brags about it on the yard XD ) ,flex ( this is the surgeon, military grade advanced tactical swiss army knifetool ) and KESS3 (good old alientech, veteran of the old days when kess v2 was still the best money could obtain. Now with new hardware theyre not the alphadogs anymore and battle for place in the top 3 spot).
Here comes the review from Mr. Jan Keskitalo- a professional ECU chip tuning master.
So we start by checking out good and the bad on autotuner.
Its a quick, reliable, good tool in dropping in files with quick turnaroundtimes on the garage.
AutoTuner
Think of it as an
iPhone.

- Truck coverage isn’t as extensive as competitors.
- Some repair/recovery functions are limited compared to Flex.

Autotuner is the tool to go for when not needing to go in depth, just quick reflashes with speed and has awesome support.
FLEX
Think of it as a Swiss
Army knife.

In general when wanting go beyond just quick reflashes and youre more into diag, cloning, virginizing ecus and transmissions then your tool of choice might be flex.
Now last but surely but least on the list good old reliable alientech, boy with the joystick on the kess v2 era. while others looked on the sidelines, this was the tool back in the days of ktag and kess v2.
Alientech KESS3
Think of it
as the veteran.
Pros
- Massive vehicle database.
- Great for older ECUs.
- Excellent truck, agricultural and marine support.
- Very mature protocols.
Cons
- Annual subscription.
- Software isn’t quite as streamlined.
- New protocol releases are sometimes slower than competitors.
Best for
- Mixed workshops
- Heavy-duty vehicles
- Older vehicles
- Agricultural machinery
So each has it own pros/cons and playfield field where they dominate. so to put these all in somekind of order (with some a.i help heres the "suited for list"…
- New tuners in the game and garages: Autotuner
- Stage 1 & Stage 2 business and off solutions quickly flashed: Autotuner
- ECU repair specialist: Flex
- Transmission (TCU) specialist: Flex
- Trucks & agriculture and marine: KESS3
- One tool for everything with a bit larger startup investment: Flex
- Best value over several years: Autotuner (no annual subscription)
So here it is, so based upon your choice in the gamefield. Are you a
reflasher with quicktool and maybe a good tagteam file service then hands down
autotuner.
Want to nibble around with ecus/tcus more, go for the deep end
where there will be more diag/cloning/virginizing and so on, go for
flex.
Kess v3 for the allarounder, more agristuff and marines than any other
tools, then you might want to tilt towards good old alientech with the kess.
