Flex Tool VAG Simos 18 ECU OBD and Boot Modes Guide

Overview of the Volkswagen Audi SIMOS18 Series ECUs using Magic Motorsport Flex ECU programmer:

The Volkswagen Audi SIMOS18 series ECUs (commonly referred to as "engine control computers") can be confirmed to include the following model variants based on version classification: SIMOS18.1, SIMOS18.2, SIMOS18.3, SIMOS18.4, SIMOS18.5, SIMOS18.6, SIMOS18.7, and SIMOS18.10. These ECUs are utilized across multiple fuel-powered vehicle models under the Volkswagen Group brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, and SEAT. Differentiation is primarily based on version numbers, with clear distinctions in vehicle applications and functional characteristics.

In terms of internal PCB layout, two distinct types exist: the SIMOS18.4 and SIMOS18.5 share one internal design, supporting only OBD read/write access with no BOOT mode available. The SIMOS18.1, 18.2, 18.3, 18.6, 18.7, and 18.10 share another internal design, supporting both OBD and BOOT read/write access.

  • SIMOS 18.1: Applied to performance models such as the Audi S3 2.0TFSI. Supports OBD connectivity for calibration/tuning. This is an early, stable production version in the series, based around the TC1791 microcontroller.
  • SIMOS 18.2: Commonly found in a wide range of mainstream 2.0T gasoline models from Volkswagen and Audi. Alongside 18.1, it is a mature base version. Supports BSL mode read/write via professional tools, suitable for most standard tuning requirements.
  • SIMOS 18.3: This version has remained in a functional testing phase for an extended period, with no fully released official application. Only limited small-scale trials exist on niche models, and aftermarket tuning tools have poor support for this version.

  • SIMOS 18.4: Primarily applied to Audi models, such as the Audi A6 45TFSI. Focuses on gasoline engine fuel injection and boost pressure control to ensure power delivery and fuel economy. Dedicated tools such as Autotuner are required for stable tuning procedures.
  • SIMOS 18.6: Applied to performance-oriented models such as the SEAT León Cupra. Supports tuning functions including boost pressure control. Like 18.1 and 18.2, this version has good tool compatibility, allowing normal read/write and checksum operations.
  • SIMOS 18.10: A newer version in the series. Some variants lack a security extended hardware module. Applied to newer MQB-platform vehicles under the Volkswagen Group. Requires soldered read/write access via a special adapter cable. Was previously under specific test adaptation for tuning tools, but now gradually supports standard tuning procedures.
